Sakue Shimohira was ten years old in the city of Nagasaki when on one faithful day she heard air raid sirens go off. She and the other children had to go hide in one of the air raid shelters terrified and alone. All of a sudden a gust of air and a flash of light blew the shelter and Sakue was knocked unconscious. She was woken a few minutes later and was surprised to see in the once empty shelter piles of burnt and charred bodies. There was death and destruction in the small shelter. She heard someone yelling ''Somebody kill me!''
Her foster father soon came for her and she was shocked by the destruction she saw. When they reached their once beautiful home they found her sisters burnt body in their now destructed home and her mothers dead corpse at a neighbors house. Her brother came looking for them shortly and was glad to see them alive. But, he was soon gone from their lives. Sakue, her sister, her foster dad, and the survivors moved to a safe home and tried to live on as hard as that was. Many died of the depth of their injuries. Sakue's family and life was torn apart.
Her sister killed herself because of the pain and disease the atomic bomb caused her. Her sister could did not have the will to live and longer but Sakue did. She chose to live and show that she is strong. That the U.S. could not kill her courage. She just hopes people have to courage to do the right thing.
